Summer Camp FAQs & Info

Who can attend Girls Rock Charlotte summer camps?

All of our summer camps celebrate and welcome girls, gender diverse and trans* youth! We are a safe and affirming space for all genders, races/ethnicities and identities. Our Kids Rock Camp is for ages 8-12. Our Teen Rock Camp is for ages 12-16. Our Film Camp is for ages 13-18.

Parents/family of 12 year-old campers can decide which camp (Kids or Teen) will best fit their camper's emotional maturity level. Young campers must be 8 by the time of summer camp. Teen campers must still be age 16 during the week of camp.

Teens who are older than 16 by the time of the camps are encouraged to join our Film Camp and/or our Teen Mentor volunteer program.

How do I find out if my camper got into camp and how do I pay?

Summer camp registrations for film and rock camps open in January of every year. All camps fill quickly so we encourage early registration. We also reserve up to 50% of our summer camp spots for families applying for scholarships and tuition assistance.

Camp tuition can be paid on the 2020 Summer Camp page and families are encouraged to apply for Scholarships if needed.

How much is the camp tuition?

Girls Rock Charlotte wants all youth and families to enjoy this amazing experience. The tuition for Girls Rock Charlotte summer camps is on an honor system: a self-reporting, sliding scale from $450 - $300 using the suggested federal guidelines for a family of 4.

A sliding scale is a tool to ensure folks have equitable access to experiences like our Summer Camp, regardless of financial resources. We ask for your active participation in deciding your contribution. If a sliding scale is implemented effectively, everyone pays a similar percentage of their income for tuition. While we are a small organization, we make sliding scale a priority because we acknowledge that we live in a world of differing privileges and income disparities.

We understand that for various reasons not every family can afford to pay the full tuition range, so we have created a range of reduced tuition amounts that makes this amazing opportunity available to everyone. Please consider your family income, resources and dependents when in the household when determining your requested tuition amount. We can also provide lunch for campers and light rail tickets as well, if requested.

For more information on tuition assistance and scholarships, please visit our Scholarship page.
Where are the summer camps located?
All of our summer camp programs are located in Uptown Charlotte - two blocks from the 7th Street Lynx Station and six blocks from Charlotte Transportation System-Bus Center.

Our Rock Camps are located in Spirit Square - hosted by the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center (corner of 7th Street & N College St).

Our Film Camp is located in the Uptown/Main branch of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Library (corner of 6th Street & N Tryon St). We will also be working and walking to Imaginon.

Does my camper need musical or film experience or their own instrument and gear?

Musical experience for the music camp is not required. In fact, most of our campers have never played an instrument before coming to our summer camp their first year! Film experience for the film camp is also not required. We feature "accessible technology" (ie. smart phones, tablets and laptops) so that your camper can make their own films when they are done!

We will provide each camper with all the instruments and gear they will need. Campers are also welcome to bring their own instrument. Please note that Girls Rock Charlotte is not responsible for any loss or damage to the camper's own instrument or gear.

What is the time commitment and what does the summer camp tuition provide?

Our summer camp tuition provides full-day programming  and instruction Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm along with a required Saturday evening show. Your camper will be an important part of a band or crew. Their team will need them there for the big show!
Teens in the Film Camp will attend 5 full days and part of Saturday to work to finalize their films in advance of their big show that evening!
Our tuition also provides all camp craft supplies, one t-shirt for a DIY workshop and surprise treats! Campers are asked to provide their own lunch due to health concerns and food allergy issues.

What is your cancellation policy?

We understand that plans may change for some of our campers and their families. We will have a waiting list for our camps and will greatly appreciate that you let us know of your change of plans as soon as possible. Our cancellation policy for the 2020 summer camps are:
  • 90+ days before 1st day of camp = Full tuition refund
  • 60+ days before 1st day of camp = 50% tuition refund
  • 30+ days before 1st day of camp = 25% tuition refund
  • Less than 30 days before 1st day of camp = No refund
