All over the world artists have been showing us that no matter how distant we must be from one another, music and film can bring us together. From the biggest stars on Broadway, to Grammy winning musical artists and Academy artists, we've seen that you don't have to be on a big stage or screen to shine, to use your voice, or to make an impact.
In the interest of our youths' and our community's safety, Girls Rock Charlotte is going to host a free online, virtual Rock N' Reel summer experience for campers and other Charlotte youth in instead of live summer camps.
We will always Rock N' Reel and yearn for the day when we can all be back in the same space to make big, loud, beautiful music and films together. But until then, we will keep finding magical ways to keep the fire of Girls Rock burning like an eternal flame.
Our Girls Rock camp experiences have always been about helping our girls and gender diverse youth build the strength and the self-esteem to know and express themselves, and to support others. Those skills of self-determination, ally-ship, and empathy have never been more important.
We can't wait to see our campers light up the stage and the screen, broadcasting their talents live from living rooms, kitchens, and garages. If a garage is good enough for the Riot Grrrl Bands of the 1990's then it's definitely going to work for our rock stars. If the top filmmakers can make award-wining video productions with their phones, then so can our youth!
While there is no replacement for the joy and buzz and energy of a room full of GRC campers, you can be sure that our camps leadership teams are giving their whole heart each day to the Girls Rock Charlotte virtual experience. In fact, we are already hard at work creating entirely new and free classes and experiences that will be meaningful and accessible to everyone.
