Girls Rock Charlotte believes in a world where everyone is empowered, included, and treated equally.
We exist to amplify voices of girls, women, and gender diverse youth & adults, empowering them to stand up for themselves and for each other. We are champions of equity and inclusion on stage, behind the camera, and in our community. Girls Rock Charlotte (GRC) was founded in 2014 by Kelly Finley, a local mom so inspired by her daughter's summer camp experience with Girls Rock NC (Chapel-Hill/Durham/Raleigh) that she decided to bring the program to her hometown. As soon as she shared her dream with other women and leaders, support quickly poured in. Friends, musicians, college students and professionals who shared her vision for a program that empowered girls and women through music all volunteered to make the first summer camp a tremendous success.
Today, Girls Rock Charlotte is a 501c3 non-profit that is a 100% volunteer-run, community organization whose mission is to empower girls and gender diverse youth and adults through music and film education. In addition to inspiring programs, we provide opportunities for our volunteers to gain valuable leadership, teaching, facilitation and production experience. Our goal is to feature diverse leaders, musicians and professionals who serve as mentors and role-models for our campers and volunteers. As a proud Charlotte-based organization, GRC aims to raise the public profile of our local musicians, filmmakers and artists, while also supporting a community that supports diversity in on the stage, behind the camera and in our community. Statement of diversity/Non-discrimination policy As a member of the Girls Rock Camp Alliance, Girls Rock Charlotte values diversity of age, race, economic status, gender expression and identity, size, physical ability, developmental ability, musical interests, learning styles, nationality, religion, thought, citizenship status, and sexual orientation. We promote and respect all identities. We do not tolerate racism, sexism, homophobia, or other discriminatory behavior or expression. |
Girls Rock! Around the World
Girls Rock Charlotte is part of a national and worldwide movement to educate and empower girls through music, creativity, and collaboration. The Girls Rock! Camp movement began in 2001 with the establishment of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls in Portland, Oregon. Today there are nearly 90 Girls Rock! organizations in 19 countries that together form the Girls Rock Camp Alliance. Girls Rock Charlotte enjoyed tremendous support from Girls Rock NC (who just celebrated their 10th anniversary!) as GRC worked to start their program. |
